Sean David Palacios, M.D., F.A.C.S.
Sean David Palacios, M.D., F.A.C.S. is a neuro-otologic surgeon who treats disorders of the ear, hearing and balance, and tumors which affect the skull base.
Dr. Palacios is fellowship trained and board certified in Neurotology/Skull Base Surgery and Board Certified in Otolaryngology - Head and Neck Surgery (Ear, Nose, and Throat). He is a diplomat of the American Board of Otolaryingology-Head and Neck Surgery and has been elected as a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons. He is well practiced in the evaluation and medical/surgical treatment of problems related to the ear, including sudden hearing loss, tympanic membrane perforation, ossicular chain problems, otosclerosis, cholesteatoma, exostosis (“surfer’s ear”), single-sided deafness, Ménière’s disease, tinnitus, vertigo, eustachian tube dysfunction, cochlear implants, bone anchored hearing aids, pituatary tumors, acoustic neuromas, and conductive and sensorineural hearing loss. Dr. Palacios also specializes in medical/surgical treatments of sinus disease and allergy.
Dr. Palacios is a native of Las Vegas. Upon completing his undergraduate training at the Universtiy of Nevada, Las Vegas (UNLV) he went on to achieve his doctorate degree in medicine from the University of Nevada School of Medicine. After graduation, Dr. Palacios obtained a grant from the National Institutes of Health to conduct research at the University of California, San Diego in the area of cellular and molecular biology of the middle and inner ear. Upon completion of his research he underwent a year of general surgery internship training at the University of California, San Franciso-East Bay and the University of California, San Diego (UCSD). Dr. Palacios stayed at UCSD to complete his four-year residency training in Otolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery followed by a two-year clinical fellowship in Otology, Neurotology and Skull Base Surgery.
Dr. Palacios has returned home to Las Vegas to establish the Nevada Ear & Sinus Institute. It is his goal to build a center for excellence in treatment of the most complex diseases of the ear and neurotologic system.
Dr. Palacios has published numerous papers in peer reviewed medical and surgical journals. He has presented research at many national and international meetings in his area of expertise and continues to do clinical research based out of his institute. Additionally, Dr. Palacios enjoys mentoring students from the local universities as well as volunteering his clinical skills in third world countries.
Dr. Palacios and his wife enjoy world travel, SCUBA Diving, hiking, and high altitude mountaineering.
Scott E. Manthei, D.O., F.O.C.O.O.
Dr Manthei attended The University of Michigan, Ann Arbor, Michigan and in 1985, received his medical degree from Midwestern University, Chicago College of Osteopathic Medicine, Chicago Illinois. He served his internship at Mt Clemens General Hospital in Mt Clemens, Michigan, and completed his residency in general surgery and Otorhinolaryngology-Facial Plastic Surgery at Pontiac Osteopathic Hospital in Pontiac, Michigan. In 1993 Dr Manthei was awarded Board Certification in Otorhinolaryngology and Facial Plastic Surgery.
His extensive surgical background in Facial Plastic and Cosmetic Surgery and in the treatment of sinus disease has given him a reputation of excellence in his field. Dr Manthei is frequently invited to speak at many local and national meetings, and holds several university teaching positions.
Married with four sons Dr. Manthei spends most of his free time with his family. As a past president of the medical society he lectures and teaches medical students and local family practice residents. Dr. Manthei is very active in the Catholic Church, and serves as founding chairman for the Fellowship of Christian Athletes. He enjoys skiing, sports fishing and softball year round.
Thorsen Haugen, M.D.
Because of a desire to expand his skills and offer his patients more, Dr. Haugen has made the decision to pursue further training. He has accepted a one-year fellowship position at the University of Pennsylvania (UPenn) in Head and Neck Oncology & Microvascular Reconstruction. While he is excited for the opportunity to perform extensive and cutting-edge cancer resections and reconstructions with the leading experts in the field, Dr. Haugen would like his patients to know that they will be missed, and he wants to thank each of them for allowing him to be a part of their lives. He is also grateful to the NESI staff for their support during his time here and says, "I am confident that my patients will continue to receive excellent care from the NESI providers." Dr. Haugen and his wife consider Las Vegas home, and they hope to return and continue serving the Las Vegas community upon completion of his fellowship. We wish him well in this future endeavor.
Dawn Zaratiegui, M.S.N., A.P.R.N.
Ms. Dawn has always had a strong desire to help and care for others. She started her medical journey, as a medical assistant in an ENT office here in town, while attending college. She graduated in 2003 with her BSN degree from UNLV. As a registered nurse, she specialized in pediatric, pediatric intensive care, pediatric hematology/oncology, and ambulatory surgical services. While working in an ambulatory surgery center, she became familiar with the various ENT surgeries, in the preoperative, intraoperative, and recovery departments. After 13 years of nursing, she decided to go back to graduate school to earn her master’s degree. She graduated in 2015, also from UNLV, with her MSN with an emphasis in family practice. She is board certified by the American Academy of Nurse Practitioners. She is also a member of the Honor Society of Nursing (STTI).
Dawn is a native Las Vegan. She has a six year old daughter and two dogs. She likes spending time with family, traveling, exercising, and cooking.
Jacquelyn Walters, Au.D.
Dr. Jacquelyn Walters graduated with her B.A. in speech and hearing sciences and psychology from the University of Iowa in 2003. She graduated with her doctorate of audiology from the University of Wisconsin in 2008. Dr. Walters holds Nevada state licensure as a dispensing audiologist. She is a member of the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association (ASHA) and holds the Certification of Clinical Competency (CCC-A). Dr. Walters is also a fellow of the American Academy of Audiology (FAAA).
Dr. Walters is trained to work with complex patients suffering from hearing loss, tinnitus, and vertigo. She enjoys helping patients find the best solutions based on each individual’s specific needs.
Dr. Walters and her husband Brian have a young daughter and an elderly dog. She enjoys spending time with her family, reading, and traveling back home to Iowa.
Sarah Thompson was raised near Denver, Colorado. She earned her Bachelor of Science degree in Audiology and Speech-Language Sciences from the University of Northern Colorado in 2013. She is currently working on her Doctor of Audiology, also at the University of Northern Colorado. Sarah has completed clinical internships at Colorado Springs School District 11 and the Denver VA Medical Center. Sarah is completing her externship at Nevada Ear + Sinus Institute. She enjoys working with patients of all ages and enjoys helping patients with hearing loss, vertigo, and tinnitus. In her free time Sarah enjoys traveling, cooking, and spending time with her husband. She also likes to visit her miniature dachshunds, Rocky and Patches, as much as possible.
