Wearing hearing aids is an exciting new experience. But many first-time users have questions about how to best use their devices. One common question is how many hours a day you should wear hearing aids.
Let’s look at a few factors to help you determine how long you should wear hearing aids.
Comfort
There’s a bit of an adjustment period to wearing hearing aids. Certain noises, like the sound of your dishwasher or the background chatter at Bungalow Coffee Co., may be a little grating at first.
While wearing your devices consistently is important, you’ll have a greater chance of long-term adoption if you ease your way into them. Start by wearing your hearing aids at home and slowly build up to noisier environments.
If your hearing aids are comfortable from day one, that’s great! Feel free to wear them about town to enjoy all the sounds you’ve missed.
Your Workout Routine
Hearing aids fit snugly and comfortably in your ears and shouldn’t hinder most workouts. There’s one exception to this rule: swimming. While most hearing aids are water-resistant or even waterproof to a certain degree, you shouldn’t submerge them completely. Instead, take your devices out before swimming and put them back in once you’re out of the pool and your ears are dry.
You can wear your hearing aids during most other sports and workout routines, but you may want to consider special clips or lanyards to secure your devices to your person if they fall out.
Cleaning
You should remove and clean your hearing aids with a cleaning kit nightly. Most people choose to do this right before bed.
Bedtime
You should not wear your hearing aids to bed as they could get lost in the sheets or damaged. Instead, place them in their case or charger in a safe location so they’re ready to use in the morning.
Finding the Right Wear Time
Approximately 28.8 million people could benefit from hearing aids. For all the clear communication and background awareness they offer, you probably want to ensure you get the greatest benefit for your devices. A good rule of thumb is to wear them as often as possible, but take them out when sleeping, swimming or showering.
