Halloween is just around the corner, and with it comes fun parties, trick-or-treating, pumpkin carving, funky costumes and more. For the 15% of U.S. adults with hearing loss, however, it’s important to consider how your hearing aids will fit into the Halloween festivities. Let’s look at some helpful tips to make the most of your hearing aids and enjoy Halloween with crisp, clear hearing.
1. Decorating Your Devices
Before heading to Star Costume & Theatrical Supply for your next costume, consider how your hearing aids can add to your ensemble. To help your devices stand out, try adding hearing aid-safe decals, stick-on jewels, covers and charms. A few things to avoid include superglue, hot glue, duct tape (or other strong tapes), paint or nail lacquer and any decorations that cover the device ports. If your decorations are likely to leave a thick residue or be difficult to remove, they’re best left off your hearing aids.
2. Be Careful With Face Paint
Whether you’re going as a cheerful kitten or a spooky ghost, face paint is a fun way to add flare to your Halloween costume. If you or your children with hearing aids are using face paint, stop painting at least one to two inches away from your devices. Avoid runny paints that could drip down or seep into your devices, and always remove your hearing aids when putting on or taking off face paint.
3. Remove Your Devices Before Bobbing for Apples
Bobbing for apples is a time-honored Halloween tradition, but it isn’t the best pastime for people with hearing aids. But don’t worry, there’s no need to miss out on the fun! Simply remove your hearing aids before taking the plunge, and dry your ears thoroughly before putting them back in.
4. Enjoy Clear Sound
One of the most important things to remember when wearing hearing aids this Halloween is to have fun! Your devices will help amplify every trick-or-treat, spooky scare and haunted house playlist—allowing you to enjoy the best Halloween yet.
